DIRTY BEACHES XIU XIU FATHER MURPHY $11 IN ADVANCE/$13 AT THE DOOR/DAY OF SHOW Dirty Beaches mastermind Alex Zhang Hungtai was born in Taiwan, but he doesn't have a home. Moving from place to place throughout his life due to a fractured family, the 30-year-old singer-songwriter sometimes felt adrift. In a recent phone interview, he described a stint selling real estate in China during his mid-twenties as "a weird displacement upon displacement." And that same feeling can be ascribed to his music, which layers coats of lo-fi grime over tracks that sound like relics from the early days of rock 'n' roll. Many of his songs come off like Elvis Presley relics recorded through the wall of a skeezy motel. Hungtai started pursuing music seriously about five years ago after moving to Montreal, and has released a few 7" singles leading up to his debut LP, Badlands, out March 29 on Zoo Xiu Xiu, one of the most original bands, is like a synth pop group that doesn't let the shiny happy face of the genre take over. They know the genre is merely a vehicle for expressing the fully intense and anguished emotions they've got bursting out of them. So instead of punchy casios and happy go lucky tunes, the foremost element is this hushed, trembling voice straining towards the epic wail. Yes, it's dramatic but the sincerity of emotion prevents it from becoming melodramatic. Out of the shards of anguish come experimentally structured songs that dart amongst jittery drum machines, wintry minor key piano, fuzzed out noise, clanging percussion. Building new, fresh songs out of raw emotion that might by a lesser band be inarticulate and messy, Xiu Xiu transcend the genre and any of their many influences, which clearly include Joy Division and Talk Talk. These guys are a downer, albeit in a gorgeous, shimmering beautiful way. Killrockstars Records. |

TRAGEDY WAR//PLAGUE COGNITIVE DISSONANCE MUCH WORSE Tragedy is a modern hardcore punk band, originally from Memphis, Tennessee, but currently residing in Portland, Oregon. The band formed in 2000 and was born from the ashes of influential modern hardcore bands His Hero is Gone and Deathreat. From the insert to the band's first, self-titled LP on Tragedy Records (2000) Tragedy's music is characterized by its unrelenting, heavy hardcore punk sound, often punctuated by melodic interludes and downshifts in tempo. The band remains strongly aware of its roots but often takes the genre in newer, more innovative directions, pioneering a new breed of hardcore punk along with close friends and contemporaries From Ashes Rise, as well other bands residing in Portland and throughout the world. $10 IN ADVANCE/ $12 DAY OF SHOW. GROLAR BEARS (VINYL RELEASE SHOW!) SALTEE MAX CORCORAN PROJECT HIPSHAKERS Grolar Bears is a 19-person funk band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. "Cos: The Original Motion Picture Score", their debut album, pays tribute to the scores of early 70s Blaxploitation movies. The album was recorded in dozens of places spanning over a year. We used "the suitcase" with all of our recording equipment in it to create a mobile studio. We snuck into churches, bandrooms, and auditoriums. Using sonic landscaping, we narrate through an imaginative movie. A trailer for the fictional movie was shot as a companion piece. Vinyl has been pressed for a release show! 6 MONTHS TO LIVE THE BANDS: (Order TBD) Attractive Nuisance Haystack Graffiti ill F.I.L.T.H. Out of Order Elevator Roadkillerz $8 IN ADVANCE/$10 DAY OF SHOW AND AT THE DOOR! SPONSORED BY SCHELL'S BREWING AND GRAIN BELT BEER! Six Months to Live was started in 2004 by a local Minneapolis musician and has grown to include over fifty alumni over the past decade. While the number of musicians increases, the venues get bigger, and the fan base grows, the soul of the project remains the same. Each year, an ever-growing group of musicians attend a kick-off event and divide into bands. Those bands then have six months to practice and prepare for a one-time show. Each year the result is different, with past shows ranging from Oklahoma! the musical to Minnesota music to hair metal. The show proceeds from each season go to support a music-centric charity. Past charities include: Radio K, MacPhail Music Therapy Program, and VH1 Save the Music. This year a portion of the proceeds will go to the local chapter of GUITARS FOR VETS. |

ANTISECT MISERY WARTORN IN DEFENCE Antisect are an English rock band, formed in 1982 in Daventry, Northamptonshire, UK. Their debut album, In Darkness There is No Choice, was released in 1983. Antisect were a significant band in the timeline of hardcore punk music, said to have been a major influence upon "black-clad, politically charged punks over the last 30 years".[1] The band addressed issues including animal rights and social justice, communicating their ideas to a largely punk rock audience, and were among the instigators of the squat venue scene in the mid to late 1980s. Members lived the lifestyle of being either on the road or part of the vibrant London squat scene of the time. They toured extensively both in the UK and Europe, before splitting up in 1987. The band reformed in May 2011 $12 ADVANCE TICKETS AVAILABLE SOON! |

PETER WOLF CRIER THE BLIND SHAKE PRISSY CLERKS It is not so much a sound as a spirit. You don't need to name it to know it or to trust it. Peter Wolf Crier's second album Garden of Arms is a document that paints a vivid portrait of all the pain and beauty of growth. Written with the at-home repose demanded by performing a hundred shows in six months, these eleven tracks were nurtured from their hushed origins with a new-found footing of confidence and experimentation. Adapting the tenets of the grinding live show, the duo of Peter Pisano and Brian Moen transformed the fuzzy distortion, rolling and crashing drums, and laser-focused purposefulness into an intensely dynamic yet supremely polished album. The lead off track, "Right Away", best exemplifies the band's new direction, a dense and jarring embrace of the immediacy of real personal connection. Later on in the album, restraint is more readily apparent, in tracks like "Settling it Off", where the sonics do not threaten to overwhelm but are instead peeled back to reveal a more subdued, secure sense of direction. The notion that any one of these songs could be your favorite depending on where your head and heart reside, moment to moment, is the most appealing aspect of this album. Throughout Garden of Arms, swagger is juxtaposed against an icy delicacy, making the scope of the record complex but somehow an easily digestible statement of how Peter Wolf Crier are rolling: a wheel, rusted with unrestrained hope. It is apparent from listening to the album that, for Pisano and Moen, 2010 was a both an absolutely exhilarating and a profoundly exhausting year. How they so evocatively and effectively channeled the fabric of their experiences into their body of work is not something they could do two years ago. This is a band that is just starting to figure out what they are capable of. FACEBOOK EVENT LINK HERE! |

THE YOUNG (MATADOR RECORDS) Formed in 2005 by vocalist/guitarist Hans Zimmerman with the rest of the lineup in place by ’07, The Young’s early singles for Chicago’s Criminal IQ and Austin’s Super Secret were followed by an appearance on Matador’s ‘Casual Victim Pile’ compilation LP/CD. Though that modest output was hardly without merit, the subsequent full-length album on NYC’s Mexican Summer, ‘Voyagers Of Legend’ was nothing less than the underground rock revelation of 2010. “There hasn’t been a full-length this spot-on with mood and 1%’er hooks in years,” declared our good friend Andrew Earles, while the folks at 29-95.com prefered to drop the “P” word, insisting ‘Voyagers’ was “an implacable psychedelic rock journey.. almost cruelly evocative.” Those fortunate enough to have seen their recent shows sharing bills with the likes of Sic Alps and Lower Dens, know all too well their recorded works to date are only skimming the surface of what these guys are capable of. |
